Ancestral Ownership: In July 1998, the Tagbanwa tribe secured landmark recognition with a Certificate of Ancestral Domain Title (CADT), establishing legal ownership over Coron Island, its surrounding waters, and hidden coastal coves.
Historical Significance: Historically, the Tagbanwa relied on these sheltered karst lagoons for sustainable fishing, harvesting edible swiftlet bird nests (nido) from high cliff caves, and ceremonial practices. The lagoons and inland waters were viewed as sacred realms protected by natural spirits.
Conservation & Stewardship: Today, the Tagbanwa enforce strict eco-tourism regulations across the lagoon to preserve its pristine water quality, maintain local biodiversity, and prevent habitat degradation from motorized boats.
