Ancestral Domain: In July 1998, the Tagbanwa tribe secured a landmark legal victory by obtaining a Certificate of Ancestral Domain Title (CADT). This title granted them official legal ownership and environmental guardianship over Coron Island, its sacred lakes, hidden lagoons, and surrounding coastal coves.
Historical Significance: Historically, the Tagbanwa utilized small, sheltered beaches like Calachuchi as rest outposts during fishing expeditions or while scaling the vertical limestone cliffs to collect valuable swiftlet bird nests (nido). The coves also provided safe, natural harbors during seasonal storms.
Conservation Efforts: Today, local Tagbanwa wardens oversee access to Calachuchi Beach to manage eco-tourism, collect user fees to fund tribal community welfare, and protect the delicate surrounding reefs from anchor damage.
