Barracuda Lake (also known as Luluyuuan Lake) is one of the most famous and unusual diving spots in the Philippines. Surrounded by giant black limestone cliffs, this freshwater lake hides a magical world beneath the surface. It is a bucket-list destination for both scuba divers and freedivers visiting Coron, Palawan.

What Makes Barracuda Lake in Coron So Unique?

The most unique thing about Barracuda Lake is its thermocline. As you dive deeper, the water temperature does not get colder—it gets much hotter!

Near the surface, the water is a comfortable 28°C (82°F). Once you pass a depth of about 14 meters (45 feet), you cross a sharp line into a different layer of water where the temperature jumps to a warm 38°C (100°F). Diving through this change feels like stepping into a warm bath. It changes how your body feels under water and is an experience you cannot find in most other places in the world.

Crystal-Clear Visibility: The underwater visibility is incredible, often reaching over 30 meters. You can see straight down into the deep rock formations.
No Waves or Currents: Because the lake is completely enclosed by high cliffs, there are no ocean waves, strong winds, or currents. This makes it a very safe and calm environment to practice breath-holding and depth skills.
Deep Water Close to Shore: The lake drops down to depths of over 40 meters very close to the wooden entry platform, making it easy to set up training lines.

What Can Scuba Divers See Inside Barracuda Lake?

While there are not many fish in the lake, scuba divers love it for the surreal underwater landscape and the strange sensations.

The Underwater Moonscape: The limestone walls continue deep underwater, creating sharp spikes, dark caves, and rock jagged shapes that look like another planet.
Silky Bottom Mud: At the deep bottom of the lake, there is a thick layer of brown silt. It is so soft and light that touching it feels like floating through clouds.
The Famous Barracuda: The lake was named after a giant, solitary barracuda that used to live there and guide divers. If you are lucky, you might still catch a glimpse of a resident fish during your dive.

How to Get to Barracuda Lake in Coron?

Barracuda Lake is located on the island of Coron. To get there, you need to book a boat tour (either a private boat or a group island-hopping tour) from Coron Town Proper. The boat ride takes about 20 to 30 minutes. Once you arrive at the wooden dock, you will take a short, 5-minute climb over a wooden stairs path through the rocks to reach the water.
